Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul dominates the Athlone skyline from almost every angle, its twin copper-domed towers visible from the castle ramparts and from the Shannon itself. Completed in 1937, the building is a confident exercise in Italian Romanesque, faced in Irish limestone and topped with those distinctive green domes that have become the town's most recognisable symbol.

The interior is large and well-proportioned, with stained glass windows by Harry Clarke's studio — among the finest in the midlands. The church also contains the baptismal font at which the tenor John McCormack was baptised, a connection the parish displays with understandable pride.
