A fifteen-minute drive north of Bantry, on the road to Glengarriff, sits one of West Cork's great food shops — a delicatessen and tapas bar opened by the late Val Manning in the 1970s and continued today by his successors. The shelves are a survey of the region's small producers: Gubbeen cheeses, Sally Barnes smoked fish, Arbutus breads, raw honey, charcuterie from local farms.
The tapas counter at the back serves boards of cheese and meat with bread and pickles, washed down by glasses of decent wine. It is the place to come for a long, slow lunch en route to the Beara, or to assemble a picnic for a day on the peninsulas.
