The Workhouse

The Workhouse in Portumna preserves part of the grim poor-relief system expanded after the Great Famine. It was built in 1850 for hundreds of inmates, and today the restored site gives a direct, sober look at poverty, migration, and state welfare in 19th-century Ireland.
