Inishbofin Island

Low Atlantic island off Connemara with beaches, walking loops, and Cromwellian ruins.

Inishbofin Island sits off the Connemara coast, far enough out to feel like a real crossing but close enough for a long day from Cleggan. It is a low, wind-bright island of beaches, stone walls, old monastic traces, and a small harbour village shaped by ferry times.

The island works because its pleasures are simple. Walk to the ruins of Cromwell's Barracks, swim or stroll at East End Bay, and look into the Inishbofin Heritage Museum near the pier before the ferry back.

It is quieter than the Aran Islands and less dramatic than the mainland mountains, but that is not a weakness. Inishbofin is for a slow day of sea air, walking, and small discoveries.
