Doolin Cave

Doolin Cave lies in the limestone hillside about two kilometres from the village centre and contains one of the more dramatic features of the Burren's extraordinary cave system. The cave is open to the public on guided tours, which run for about an hour and take you down a steep descent to the main chamber.

The Great Stalactite dominates the experience — at 7.3 metres it is an unusual scale for a cave formation. The rest of the cave is relatively modest in decoration, but the scale of the main chamber and the quality of the stalactite make it worth the entrance fee, particularly for anyone with an interest in geology or karst landscapes.

A story
The Great Stalactite in Doolin Cave is the longest free-hanging stalactite in the northern hemisphere, stretching 7.3 metres from the cave ceiling. It took approximately 350,000 years to reach its current length, growing roughly 2 centimetres per century from calcium carbonate deposited by water percolating through the limestone above.
