South Great George's Street is Dublin's best alternative shopping and eating strip, running south from Dame Street through a Victorian covered arcade to Camden Street. The arcade, built in 1881, houses independent cafés, vintage clothes shops, bookstores, and record shops alongside bars and restaurants.
This stretch of street has resisted the chain-store homogenisation that has affected Grafton Street, and retains an eclectic, slightly bohemian character. The George, Grogan's pub, and several of Dublin's best independent coffee shops are here. It's the street Dubliners recommend when visitors ask where locals actually go.
