The Hill of Faughart carries several layers of Irish history in one windy ridge north of Dundalk. It is associated with Saint Brigid, early Christian remains, holy wells, pilgrimage, and the 1318 battle in which Edward Bruce's Irish campaign came to its violent end.
The place is also simply a good viewpoint over Dundalk Bay and the surrounding country. It suits travellers who like their history outdoors and uneven underfoot, with ruined stones, devotional traces, and landscape all doing part of the telling.
