An Taibhdhearc

Address Middle Street

An Taibhdhearc (pronounced "Tive-ark") is Ireland's national Irish-language theatre, founded in Galway in 1928. It stages plays, performances, and events entirely in the Irish language, and has been central to the Irish cultural revival in Connacht for nearly a century. Siobhán McKenna, one of Ireland's greatest twentieth-century actresses, performed here early in her career; the theatre occupies a special place in Irish cultural life.

The theatre is on Middle Street, a short walk from Shop Street. Performances are in Irish, but the programme often includes work that can be followed without full fluency — music, dance, and physical theatre. The building is worth seeing from the outside regardless of whether you attend a performance. If you are in Galway during the Galway International Arts Festival, the Taibhdhearc hosts some of the most interesting fringe and Irish-language programming of the festival.
