Eyre Square is the main public square of Galway, an open park at the top of the city centre that serves as the natural starting point for exploring. The square combines a formal park with a series of significant monuments — the Browne Doorway (a seventeenth-century carved stone door frame, rescued from the demolition of a merchant's house), the Quincentennial Fountain with its rust-coloured sails referencing the Galway Hooker fishing boats, and Kennedy Memorial Park.
Eyre Square
A story
Eyre Square is officially named John F. Kennedy Memorial Park following the American president's visit to Galway in June 1963, five months before his assassination. Kennedy received the Freedom of Galway on that visit and gave a speech that famously included the line "If you ever come to the United States, I hope you will come to Washington, and I hope you will come by Galway." The square still has a memorial to the visit.
