Glengarriff Nature Reserve

Glengarriff Nature Reserve protects the wooded valley just outside the village, where the river cuts through oak, birch, holly, and thick undergrowth before reaching Bantry Bay. It is an easy place to underestimate from the road; once you are inside, the valley feels much larger and wilder.

There are several marked walks, from gentle riverside paths to steeper climbs with views over the harbour and mountains. Wear shoes that can handle mud. Even on a dry day the woods hold moisture, which is part of their appeal.

A story
The woods are a surviving piece of the damp Atlantic woodland that once covered much more of Ireland's western seaboard. In summer the place can look almost subtropical, but the real character is older and rougher: moss, oak, rock, and water packed into a steep glacial valley.
