Kyteler's Inn

The oldest inn in Kilkenny, scene of Ireland's first witchcraft trial in 1324

Kyteler's Inn claims to be the oldest in Kilkenny, operating from the building that belonged to the infamous Dame Alice Kyteler in the early 14th century. The stone walls of the lower floors are genuinely medieval, and the place has been a drinking establishment in one form or another for most of those seven centuries.

The current bar is a popular, convivial place spread over several atmospheric rooms. It serves food as well as drink, with the traditional pub menu supplemented by daily specials. The kitchen is solid rather than remarkable, but the setting is the real draw — you are eating and drinking in a building with more history than most museums. There is live traditional music most evenings in summer. The Witchcraft Exhibition in the cellar covers the Kyteler trial in some detail.

A story
Dame Alice Kyteler was tried for witchcraft in Kilkenny in 1324 — the first such trial recorded in Ireland. The charges included sorcery, heresy, and the murder of three husbands. Alice herself escaped to England before sentence was passed. Her servant Petronilla de Meath was less lucky: she was burned at the stake on Kilkenny's High Street, the first person to be executed for witchcraft in Ireland. The inn Alice owned on St Kieran's Street has been serving drinks ever since.
