The Butler Gallery is Kilkenny's contemporary art museum, presenting a programme of exhibitions by Irish and international artists. The gallery moved in 2019 to a purpose-built space in the old Coach House complex near the castle, giving it more room and a better public presence than its previous home in the castle basement.
The programme leans toward ambitious conceptual and multimedia work rather than traditional painting and sculpture. Quality varies — some shows are exceptional, others less so — but the gallery is serious about its curatorial mission and takes risks that smaller Irish institutions don't always manage. Admission is free. Check the programme online before visiting; the gallery often closes between shows for installation.
