Jerpoint Abbey, 18 kilometres south of Kilkenny near the village of Thomastown, is the finest Cistercian ruin in Ireland. Founded in 1158 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540, the abbey's ruined nave, tower, and cloister survive in remarkable condition.
The carved cloister arcade is the highlight — a series of 15th-century limestone columns decorated with figures of saints, knights, bishops, and abbots, each one distinct and individually characterised, ranging from the formal to the genuinely funny. The quality of the carving is extraordinary, and it is far better preserved than most medieval Irish stonework. The tower can be climbed for views over the surrounding farmland. The site is managed by the OPW and has a small visitor centre. Allow a full hour.
