The Milk Market on Mungret Street has operated as a city market since 1852 and is now Limerick's most reliable food destination. The covered area, refurbished and roofed in 2010, holds the Saturday market — easily the busiest of the week — with around 50 stalls of farmhouse cheeses, organic vegetables, local fish from Kerry and Clare, sourdough bread, hot food, and the Limerick speciality of cured pork.
A smaller Friday market focuses on prepared food and crafts, and a Sunday morning market adds antiques and second-hand books. Get there before 11 on a Saturday to avoid the queues at the most popular stalls (Wild Onion bakery, Country Choice Tipperary, On the Wild Side). The covered area is a working space, not a tourist installation; expect to be jostled.
