O'Connell Street is Limerick's main thoroughfare, a long straight axis through Newtown Pery — the 18th-century Georgian quarter laid out by Edmund Sexton Pery from the 1760s. The Georgian terraces are still mostly intact, with red brick façades and fanlight doorways, and the street is lined with banks, restaurants, the Belltable arts centre, and the city's grandest hotel (the Savoy on Henry Street, a block west).
A walk along O'Connell Street from the bottom (at Crescent) to the top (at Patrick Street) takes about 15 minutes and passes the People's Park, the Daniel O'Connell monument, and the Crescent Church. The street is at its best in the late afternoon when the western light hits the red brick.
