Yeats Country Views

The view from the promenade at Rosses Point is the picture-postcard Yeats Country panorama: the flat-topped massif of Benbulben to the north, the cone of Knocknarea to the south, and Sligo Bay between them. On a clear evening with the light low it is unfairly beautiful.

The headland itself is criss-crossed by easy walking paths, including a loop around the golf course perimeter. Allow an hour for the basic loop; longer if you stop at every viewpoint. The Greenlands area at the edge of the village is a National Inventory of Architectural Heritage site, with a fine sequence of Victorian and Edwardian holiday houses.

A story
W. B. Yeats spent his childhood summers in Sligo and used its landscapes — Knocknarea, Benbulben, the lake isle of Innisfree, the rocky promontory of Lissadell — as the backdrop for much of his poetry. His grave is at Drumcliff, ten kilometres north of Rosses Point under the shadow of Benbulben.
