Church of San Giovanni Battista

The parish church of Carunchio stands at the heart of the old village, its façade facing a small square that serves as the social center of the community. The interior is modest but contains the remarkable 1692 pipe organ, still played for Sunday services — an unusual survival for a village of this size.

The bell tower offers a sense of the village's elevation: on a clear day the Maiella massif fills the western horizon, and the wooded hills stretching toward the Adriatic are visible to the east. The church is open during morning mass; otherwise, the sacristan can usually be found nearby.

A story
The pipe organ inside San Giovanni Battista dates from 1692, making it one of the oldest functioning organs in southern Abruzzo. It was built by the Neapolitan craftsman Donato del Piano and underwent restoration in the 20th century. The instrument is still played at Sunday masses and on feast days.
