Majella National Park

Majella National Park protects the main mountain mass and its surrounding valleys, forests, and villages. It is one of the best places in central Italy for walkers who want a more rugged landscape than the better-known Tuscan and Umbrian hills.

The park is large enough that you should not treat it as one stop. Pick a side: Caramanico for gorges and spa-town access, Fara San Martino for the dramatic eastern valleys, or Sulmona and Campo di Giove for western approaches.

A story
The park is often called one of Italy's wildest protected areas because it still shelters Apennine wolves, Marsican brown bears, chamois, and golden eagles. That wildness begins surprisingly close to the Adriatic plain.
