Monte Amaro

Monte Amaro is the highest summit of the Majella massif, rising to 2,793 metres. It is a serious mountain objective, with long approaches, exposed weather, and broad high terrain that can be disorienting when visibility drops.

In good conditions, the views are magnificent: the Adriatic to one side, the Abruzzo highlands to the other, and the pale limestone body of the Majella all around. Go with proper mountain preparation, not as an improvised afternoon stroll.

A story
Monte Amaro is the second-highest summit in the continental Apennines after Corno Grande. Its name means "bitter mountain", a fair warning when cloud, wind, or snow rolls across the high plateau.
