Fontana del Vecchio

14th-century Gothic fountain at the head of Piazza Garibaldi

The Fontana del Vecchio — Fountain of the Old Man — stands at the eastern end of Piazza Garibaldi, fed by the spring water that the medieval aqueduct still channels down from Monte Morrone. The fountain dates to 1474, with later additions, and takes its name from the small carved head of an old man (some say Solimo, mythical founder of Sulmona) on its facade.

It is more a piece of street furniture than a monument, but a good vantage point from which to take in the long sweep of the piazza and the aqueduct's arcade. The water still runs cold and pure year-round.
