Sulmona has a direct rail link with Rome via the regional line through Avezzano — the journey takes around two and a half hours. A secondary line runs south through the mountains to Castel di Sangro, and another connects via Terni in Umbria to Naples.
By car, Sulmona is reached from Rome via the A25 motorway (about 150km, under two hours). From the Adriatic coast, the SS17 runs inland from Pescara through the Popoli gorge.
