Piazza Garibaldi

Vast medieval square flanked by a 13th-century aqueduct — among the finest in Abruzzo

The Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of Sulmona and one of the most striking medieval squares in central Italy. Long and broad, it is flanked on two sides by the surviving arches of a 13th-century aqueduct — the only one of its kind in Abruzzo. The Gothic fountain of the Fontana del Vecchio sits at one end, the Romanesque-Gothic church of San Filippo Neri at the other.

The square hosts a busy Wednesday and Saturday morning market, the famous Giostra Cavalleresca jousting tournament in July, and the Easter ceremony of the Madonna che Scappa. Cafes spill onto the cobbles, locals gather on the steps and benches. It is the natural place to begin or end a wander through the old town.

A story
On Easter morning the piazza hosts the Madonna che Scappa in Piazza — Sulmona's most famous ritual. A statue of the mourning Virgin Mary, draped in black, is carried in procession across the square towards the risen Christ. At the moment of recognition the black mantle is whipped off to reveal a green dress, twelve doves are released, and the bells are rung in jubilation. The whole thing happens at full sprint.
