Cala Jannita (Black Beach)

Cala Jannita — known locally as the Spiaggia Nera or Black Beach — takes its name from the dark volcanic sand that distinguishes it from the lighter pebble beaches elsewhere along the coast. The beach sits in a small cove flanked by cliffs, accessible by a steep path from the road or by boat. The dark sand absorbs heat and holds it well into the evening, making this a good spot for late-afternoon swimming when the water is warmest.

The contrast between the black sand, the brilliant turquoise water, and the pale limestone cliffs is striking enough that the beach has become something of a landmark image for Basilicata tourism — though it remains far less crowded than comparable spots on the Amalfi Coast or in Sardinia. In peak summer (July and August), it fills up by mid-morning; arriving early or coming by boat lets you approach the cove from the water and swim in before the crowds.
