Coastal Hiking Paths

The Maratea coast is laced with paths through the macchia scrubland that connect the borgo, the sea, the various coves, and the mountain above. The main spine is the path from the Porto up through the borgo to Monte San Biagio, a climb of around 600 metres through rosemary, myrtle, and cistus. The views as you gain height open progressively along the coast in both directions.

Shorter walks lead from the main coastal road down to the coves — some of these are steep, rocky scrambles rather than marked trails, so good footwear is important. The Sentiero dei Limiti, a waymarked path, links several points along the coast between Maratea and the Calabrian border to the south. Spring is the best season for walking, when the macchia is in flower and the heat has not yet set in; the paths can be uncomfortably hot in July and August.
