Porto di Maratea

The port of Maratea is a small natural harbour about three kilometres below the old town, sheltered by a low headland and lined with a string of restaurants, gelaterias, bars and a few souvenir shops along the quay. It is the social hub of the lower town in summer — the place where visitors and the local crowd both converge in the evening for an aperitivo with a view of the moored fishing boats and yachts.

Boat excursions to the sea caves and coves along the coast leave from here through the summer season. The most popular run heads south to the Grotta delle Meraviglie (Grotto of Wonders) and along the Marina di Maratea cliffs; a longer trip takes in the harder-to-reach beaches and grottos toward Acquafredda. Schedules and prices are posted on the boards along the harbour wall — expect to pay around €15-25 for the basic two-hour tour.
