Castello del Malconsiglio

The Castello del Malconsiglio is one of the most evocative small castles in Basilicata. Built in the Norman period and modified under Swabian rule, it sits at the highest point of the town with six towers intact — a remarkable survival for a structure that has stood since the eleventh century.

The castle is best known as the site of the Congiura dei Baroni, the barons' conspiracy of 1481 against Ferdinand I of Aragon. That episode of intrigue and betrayal gave the castle its permanent nickname. The exterior is well preserved and the views from the walls across the Bradano valley are excellent.

Opening times can be irregular; check locally before making a special trip. Entry is usually free or involves a small voluntary contribution.

A story
On 24 February 1481, a group of Neapolitan barons gathered here and swore an oath against King Ferdinand I of Aragon. The conspiracy — known as the Congiura dei Baroni — was eventually crushed, the ringleaders executed, and their estates confiscated. The castle earned the name "Malconsiglio" (bad counsel) as a result, a name it has carried for over five centuries.
