Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Maggiore

The parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important religious building in Miglionico. Its Renaissance portal is the standout element — an elegant carved doorway that speaks to the prosperity this small town once enjoyed. The separate Romanesque belfry is older and plainer, a solid stone tower that predates the Renaissance additions by several centuries.

Inside, the church holds a polyptych attributed to Cima da Conegliano, dating to around 1490 — an unexpectedly refined work for a rural Basilicatan town and one of the better things to see in the area. The painting depicts the Madonna enthroned with saints and shows the influence of Venetian painting in southern Italy.

The church is usually open during morning hours; if you find it locked, ask at the comune office nearby.
