Porta Sant'Angelo

The surviving city gate of the medieval circuit, Porta Sant'Angelo marks the eastern entrance to the centro storico. The arched stone gateway has been rebuilt and patched many times since the 13th century but still gives a clear sense of how the town was once walled and defensible — a useful thing for a hilltop settlement so close to the old border between the Kingdom of Naples and the Republic of Venice.

The little square just inside the gate, with its few benches and a view across the Bradano valley, is one of the better places to sit for a few minutes before plunging back into the alleys.
