Potenza's old town sits on a long, narrow ridge several hundred metres above the lower town and the train station. The two are connected by public escalators and a series of vertical-rise stairways and lifts — a piece of late-1980s civic engineering that locals call "scale mobili", which now act as the city's main transit spine.
The escalators are free and run from early morning to late evening. They make the city actually pleasant to walk despite the topography. Buses serve the wider municipality but are rarely useful for a visitor.
