Via Pretoria

Via Pretoria is Potenza's pedestrian high street, running the length of the narrow ridge on which the old city sits. Lined with shops, gelaterie, bars and the occasional baroque church facade, it comes alive in the early evening when the locals turn out for the passeggiata.

This is essentially the only walkable urban set-piece in town. Walk it from one end to the other (about a kilometre), stop for a coffee or a Crodino, and you have done old Potenza. The Cathedral lies a short detour south of the central stretch.

A story
Via Pretoria follows the line of the Roman cardo through the upper town. The street has been the social spine of Potenza for two thousand years, surviving multiple earthquakes that flattened nearly everything around it.
