The Franciscan church and convent of San Bernardino da Siena was founded in 1436 on the high ground above the old town. It is the most important religious building in Amantea — and the most rewarding to look inside, especially for the wooden altarpieces and the painted ceilings of the nave.
The convent next door houses a small ecclesiastical museum with vestments, reliquaries, and a couple of decent Renaissance panels. The cloister, with its arched walkway and central well, is a quiet spot to escape the midday sun. Hours are limited and can change with the season — check at the parish office before climbing the hill.
