Capri town is reached from Marina Grande by funicular, a short cable car that runs every 15 minutes and costs a few euros. Taxis wait at the port and in the Piazzetta; they are expensive by Italian standards. A bus service connects Marina Grande, Capri town, Anacapri, and Marina Piccola; tickets are bought on board or at tobacconists and are considerably cheaper than taxis.
Walking is the best way to get around once you are in either town. Most of the island's footpaths date from the pre-tourist era when mule tracks connected the farms. The path from Capri town to Villa Jovis takes about 45 minutes each way; the Phoenician Steps (900 steps cut into the cliffside) connect Anacapri to the northern coast and are one of the island's more dramatic walks.
Private cars are not permitted for visitors. Scooters can be rented in both towns; they are useful for the road between Capri and Anacapri but not for paths and steps.
