College of the Augustales

The College of the Augustales is one of the more interesting civic buildings inside Herculaneum. The Augustales were priests responsible for the cult of Augustus, and their meeting hall gives a compact view of how religion, status, and local politics overlapped in a Roman town.

The building consists mainly of one large decorated room, but the surviving paintings and layout make it worth noticing rather than walking past on the way to the larger houses.
