Samnite House

The Samnite House is one of the oldest houses excavated at Herculaneum, and one of the best places on the site to understand how a Roman home changed over time. Parts of the property were sold off or rented out, but the surviving atrium still has an elegant, enclosed feel.

Look for the high, roofed central space and the decorated rooms around it. It is a smaller stop than the famous villas, but it rewards a slow look because the domestic details are so clear.
