Vomero

The hill district above the Centro Storico, reached by funicular from Piazza Fuga, Via Cimarosa, or Via Morghen. Vomero is a more residential and bourgeois Naples — wide shopping streets, pasticcerie, and the Castel Sant'Elmo fortress at the summit. The views from the castle walls across the bay to Vesuvius are the best in the city.

The Certosa di San Martino, a former monastery turned museum, occupies the summit alongside the castle and contains one of the finest collections of presepe (nativity scenes) in Italy, along with paintings, decorative arts, and a section on Neapolitan history. The district is notably cooler than the waterfront in summer.
