Certosa di San Martino

A former Carthusian monastery at the summit of the Vomero hill, adjacent to Castel Sant'Elmo, converted into a museum of Neapolitan history, art, and culture. The monastery church itself — lavishly decorated in baroque marble and frescoes by Ribera, Caracciolo, and Stanzione — is one of the finest baroque interiors in Naples.

The museum covers Neapolitan painting from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, decorative arts, carriages, and the celebrated presepe (nativity scene) collection. The cloister with its marble statues and terraced garden is one of the most serene spaces in the city. Open Tuesday to Sunday; combined tickets with Castel Sant'Elmo are available.

A story
The Certosa's presepe collection contains the Cuciniello presepe, assembled in the nineteenth century by a Neapolitan nobleman who spent thirty years collecting and arranging over 180 figures, 450 animals, and thousands of miniature accessories. The entire Neapolitan world of the eighteenth century is reproduced in miniature — from the fishmonger to the shepherd, from the nobleman to the beggar.
