The Lidi di Comacchio are a string of seaside resort towns on the Adriatic coast, 5 km east of the town itself, connected by a road through the pinewood. The main ones — Lido di Pomposa, Lido degli Scacchi, Porto Garibaldi, and Lido Estense — run in sequence along a flat, sandy coastline backed by holiday apartments and beach clubs (stabilimenti balneari) where you rent a beach umbrella and sunlounger by the day or week.
The beaches here are wide, gently shelving, and suitable for children: the Adriatic is shallow and warm by June. The atmosphere is resolutely Italian family holiday — morning espresso, long lunches under beach umbrellas, gelato in the afternoon. Not somewhere for solitude or beauty, but entirely pleasant for a day's swimming. The pinewoods between the coast and the lagoon make for cool morning cycling. Ferrarese families have been spending August here for generations.
