Comacchio is best explored slowly on foot or by bicycle. The town's canal network is compact — you can walk from one end to the other in twenty minutes — but the pleasure is in lingering on the bridges, watching the light change on the water, and ducking into churches and courtyards. The surrounding Valle di Comacchio, one of the largest brackish lagoon systems in Europe, rewards an afternoon's cycling or a guided boat trip through the marshes.
