Modena's cathedral is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque architecture in Italy. Built from 1099 onwards by the architect Lanfranco and decorated with extraordinary bas-reliefs by the sculptor Wiligelmo, the facade tells biblical stories with a raw expressive power that was revolutionary for its time. The Ghirlandina bell tower alongside it reaches 88 metres and is visible from much of the surrounding plain. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
