Modena is serious food territory. This is where traditional balsamic vinegar comes from — the real thing, aged for 12 to 25 years in wooden barrels, nothing like the commercial stuff. Tortellini in brodo, tigelle (small flatbreads with cured meats), and grilled meats with gremolata are local staples. The city has more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere in Italy, including Osteria Francescana, which has held three stars and topped the World's 50 Best list.
