The Este family ruled Modena for centuries, and their art collection — now in the Palazzo dei Musei — is one of the finest in northern Italy. The Galleria Estense holds paintings by Velázquez, Correggio, Tintoretto, and Bernini's extraordinary bust of Francesco I d'Este. The adjacent Biblioteca Estense houses the illuminated Bible of Borso d'Este, one of the most beautiful manuscripts in existence.
