Getting Around

Ravenna is a flat city and excellent for cycling. The main monuments are spread over about two kilometres and can easily be covered on foot in a day, but renting a bike — available at the railway station and several rental outlets near the centre — makes it easier to reach the Mausoleum of Theodoric on the northern edge of the old town and the pine forests along the Adriatic coast.

The city centre is largely restricted to traffic, and the main monument sites are all within the pedestrian zone. Local buses connect the railway station with the outlying areas. Taxis are available but rarely necessary for monument-visiting.

A good combined ticket covering all eight UNESCO monuments is sold at the main sites and represents excellent value. The monuments are spread far enough apart that it is worth planning a route before setting out.
