Trieste is well connected by train and road but has limited air links. Most visitors arrive by train, by car from Ljubljana or Venice, or via a budget flight into Trieste or a nearby airport.
By air. Trieste Airport (Ronchi dei Legionari, TRS) is about 35 km northwest of the city, with connections to Rome, London, and a handful of other European cities. The APT bus connects the airport to the city centre in around 50 minutes. Alternatively, Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) — about 150 km west — has far more connections and is reachable by bus, train, or car in around two hours.
By train. Trieste Centrale station is well connected to Venice (about 2 hours), Ljubljana (1 hour 45 minutes), and Vienna (6–7 hours, with a change in Ljubljana or Villach). The station is a short walk from the waterfront and the main central sights.
By car. Trieste sits at the end of the A4 motorway from Venice (about 150 km, 1 hour 45 minutes). From Ljubljana it is about 90 km on the A1/E61. Parking in the centre is limited and expensive; most visitors leave cars at the edge of the centre.
