One of the largest sea-facing squares in Europe and Trieste's undisputed showpiece. Three sides are lined with monumental Habsburg-era palaces — the Palazzo del Comune, the Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, the Palazzo del Governo — and the fourth opens directly onto the Gulf of Trieste. The scale and the view make it feel more dramatic than a typical Italian piazza.
Come early in the day to avoid the midday crowds. The Caffè degli Specchi on the square is the classic spot for a coffee with a view.
