The Austrian Quarter is the part of central Trieste shaped most strongly by Habsburg rule, with grand civic spaces, palaces, cafes, and streets that often feel closer to Vienna than to the rest of Italy. Piazza Unita d'Italia is the area's most famous set piece.
It is best visited as a walk rather than a single monument: look for the mix of Neoclassical, Baroque, Eclectic, and Art Nouveau buildings between the waterfront, the canal, and the old commercial streets.
