Bars and Cafes

Aperitivo time in Udine takes over Piazza Matteotti from around six o'clock — the porticoes fill up and the city slows down for an hour or two. The drink to ask for is a Tajut, a small glass of local wine; ordering coffee means ordering an espresso unless you specify otherwise. Bars and cafes are cheaper than in the bigger Italian cities, and they tend to close earlier — by eleven on most weeknights.
