Piazza della Libertà is the starting point: the Loggia del Lionello (15th-century Gothic town hall), the Torre dell'Orologio (clock tower modelled on the one in Piazza San Marco), and the Renaissance portico of San Giovanni are all clustered here. Walking up to the Castello takes fifteen minutes and rewards with views across the plain to the Alps; the castle houses the civic museums of art and history. The Museo Diocesano and the Gallerie del Tiepolo in the Palazzo Arcivescovile hold the most concentrated collection of Tiepolo works in the city — the frescoes in the throne room and chapel were among his earliest major commissions. Friuli is one of Italy's best wine regions (Collio and Colli Orientali) and Udine's wine bars (osterie) are the best introduction to local whites like Friulano and Ribolla Gialla.
