Bardolino Wine Country

The eastern shore of Lake Garda, between Bardolino and Lazise, is wine country — the hills above the lake are planted with the Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes that go into Bardolino DOC. The wine is best drunk young and slightly chilled on a hot lakeside afternoon, which is exactly what everyone does.

The town of Bardolino has a small wine museum (the Museo del Vino, housed in an old winery) and several cantinas open for tastings. The lakefront promenade is pleasant for a walk. A few kilometres inland, the village of Cavaion Veronese and the hills above Costermano offer fine vineyard views. The area also produces Lugana, a white wine from Turbiana grapes grown around the southern tip of the lake, which is worth seeking out.

A story
Bardolino DOC wine takes its name from the small town on the eastern shore. The wine — light-bodied, dry, made primarily from Corvina grapes — has been produced in the hills above the lake since Roman times. The Consorzio del Bardolino runs a wine museum in the town, and in October the Cantine Aperte festival opens dozens of producers to the public over a weekend.
