Windsurfing and Kitesurfing

The northern end of Lake Garda, particularly the stretch between Riva del Garda and Malcesine, is one of Europe's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations. The combination of reliable thermal winds, warm water, a dramatic mountain backdrop, and good infrastructure (schools, equipment rental, comfortable lakeside towns) draws riders from across Europe every summer.

Torbole, just east of Riva, is the epicentre — a small town that has largely given itself over to the watersport industry. Every free surface in summer seems to be a board or a sail. Several world-ranking competitions are held here annually. Beginners can take lessons from the many schools based in town; the lake's flat water in sheltered bays is ideal for first attempts.

A story
The winds at the northern end of Lake Garda have names and personalities: the Pelèr blows from the north in the morning, starting around dawn and dying by early afternoon; the Ora comes from the south in the afternoon. This reliable, predictable pattern — consistent in direction, consistent in timing — is what makes the northern lake one of the best venues in Europe for boardsport competition.
