Sabaudia Town Hall

The Palazzo Comunale anchors the central piazza and is the single most photographed building in town. The composition — a long, low slab in white travertine with a tall, severe brick clock tower attached at one end — is a textbook example of Italian rationalism, and unusually well preserved. The clock face is plain; the bell at the top still rings the hours.

Inside, the council chamber retains its original 1930s fittings, including period light fixtures and an apse fresco. The exterior arcade along the piazza is a favourite local meeting point, especially around aperitivo time, and a sequence of bas-reliefs on the tower commemorates the draining of the marshes and the founding of the town.

A story
The whole town of Sabaudia, town hall included, was designed and built in just 253 days — a deadline imposed by Mussolini, who insisted the new town be inaugurated on the anniversary of the March on Rome in 1934.
